Humpback Tracks

Humpback whales are one of the most iconic species in the Pacific Ocean. These magnificent creatures were the primary inspiration for Oceans are Instrumental. Since first hearing Humpback whalesong in the 1970's, I thought they were some of the most beautiful sounds in nature. Humpback Tracks is my attempt to add guitar music to Humpback whalesong.

Humpback whales are vital for ocean balance, acting as keystone species that regulate marine life and contribute to carbon sequestration. Conservation is essential to protect biodiversity, maintain healthy ecosystems, and address climate change impacts.

Ocean Birdies

Ocean Birdies fuses energetic guitar riffs with the sounds of Pacific Ocean birds. The guitar captures the ocean's wildness, while the birds bring a peaceful harmony, creating a lively yet serene coastal soundscape.

Southern California's ocean birds, with their diverse species and vibrant plumage, are integral indicators of marine ecosystem health. These birds, including plovers, curlews, and cormorants, rely on coastal habitats for nesting, feeding, and migration. Conservation is imperative to preserve their habitats, as urbanization and pollution threaten nesting sites and food sources. By safeguarding these bird populations, we ensure the balance of coastal ecosystems and promote biodiversity, contributing to the overall well-being of the environment they inhabit.

Sea Otter Fodder

Sea Otter Fodder is a fun little song that blends in sounds of Sea Otters squealing and chirping.

California sea otters are a charismatic and keystone species, contributing to a healthy coastal ecosystem. As top predators, they control sea urchin populations, which in turn helps maintain kelp forests. Conservation is vital due to historical population declines caused by fur trade and ongoing threats like oil spills, habitat loss, and disease. Protecting these otters through conservation efforts ensures the vitality of coastal habitats, supports biodiversity, and promotes the overall ecological balance of California's coastal waters.

Acoustic Waves combines the sounds of ocean waves with acoustic guitars. Ocean waves are mesmerizing to watch as they move gracefully in and out, crashing against the shore. The sound of the waves is calming and soothing, creating a peaceful atmosphere. Waves are formed by the wind that blows over the surface of the ocean. The size and strength of the waves are determined by the speed, fetch and direction of the wind, often hundreds of miles away from the coast.

Orca Dreams

Orca Dreams mixes lively electric guitar riffs with the deep, echoing calls of orcas. The fast-paced melody and orca sounds create a unique mix of human artistry and natural power, offering an unexpected auditory experience.

Orcas, often called killer whales, are apex predators that hold a crucial place in marine ecosystems. As highly intelligent and social creatures, they play a vital role in maintaining the balance of ocean food chains. Conservation efforts are essential to protect orcas, as they face threats such as habitat degradation, pollution, and disturbance from human activities like shipping and noise pollution. By conserving orcas and their habitats, we ensure the health and resilience of marine environments, underscoring the interconnectedness of these magnificent animals with the well-being of our oceans.

When surfing in Southern California, a Sea Lion will often pop up. I sometimes tease my bodyboarding friend, saying "There's Sammy". Sea Lions and Harbor Seals seem to be very curious about bodyboarders.

Southern California Sea Lions are a fascinating species that inhabit the coastal areas of California. These marine mammals are known for their remarkable agility both in water and on land, as well as for their loud barks and playful behavior. They have a sleek, streamlined body and are brown or gray in color, with males being larger and darker than females. Southern California Sea Lions are social creatures, often forming large groups on rocky shores or rafts of kelp. Our Sea Lion population face threats from pollution, fishing nets, and habitat destruction, making conservation efforts crucial for their survival.

Dolphin Time is an instrumental guitar piece that beautifully intertwines the strums of guitars with the playful sounds of dolphins. The occasional chirps and clicks of dolphins add an otherworldly dimension to the music, evoking a deep connection with nature. This unique fusion of guitar and dolphin sounds creates a tranquil, almost meditative atmosphere, inviting listeners to close their eyes and imagine themselves gliding alongside these graceful creatures in the vast, blue ocean.

Dolphin Time

I was fortunate enough to visit the Channel Islands Marine and Wildlife Institute, (CIMWI), in Goleta CA. While there I was captivated by an adorable baby Elephant Seal. To keep track of sick and injured animals, CIMWI assigns numbers. The Elephant Seal I met was given the number 17, Ellie17.

Northern elephant seals are fascinating marine mammals known for their distinctive size and appearance. Males are especially notable for their large noses, resembling an elephant's trunk, which is where they get their name. These seals can grow quite large, with males reaching up to 13 feet in length and weighing up to 4,500 pounds, significantly larger than the females. They are incredible divers and spend most of their lives in the Pacific Ocean, diving deep to hunt for fish and squid.

Majestic Blues

Majestic Blues is an instrumental rock guitar track that combines guitar riffs with the deep calls of blue whales. Throughout, blue whale sounds blend with the music, creating a contrast between the guitar and the serene whale calls. This mix of guitar and whale sounds delivers a dynamic experience, evoking a journey through the ocean. Blue Whale calls are very low in frequency, making them difficult to hear. The whale sounds in this song were increased in frequency in order make them more listenable.

Bill and the Pelicans

I had a good friend named Bill who has had his share of tough times. After losing a job, he resorted to fishing for his dinner. Pelicans would often show up when the fishing was good. This song is dedicated to the memory of Bill and his exploits with the Pelicans.
